Sunderbans Folk Festival 2018


Sunderbans is the largest mangrove forest of world, crisscrossed by countless rivers and rivulets. There are over 100 Bhatiyali singers, 17 Jhumur dance troupes and 22 teams of Banbibir Pala, an indigenous theatre form, in the part of Sunderbans in West Bengal. The Department of Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises and Textiles (MSME&T), Government of West Bengal, is working with the artists since 2016 for developing Rural Craft & Cultural Hub supported by UNESCO.

The artists are organizing a three-day Sunderbans Folk Festival at Pakhiralay in Gosaba block from 28 to 30 December, with the support of West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board. Entry is free and all are welcome!

How to reach: Canning is located at 1.5 hours distance by train from Sealdah. Canning to Gadkhali is 29 km, which takes about an hour. After crossing the river at Gadkhali, comes Gosaba. From Gosaba to Pakhiralay it will take 45 minutes by auto rickshaw.  Godkhali to Pakhiralay boat available. Kolkata to Pakhiralay is 4 hours journey. Parking available at  Godkhali.

Mela schedule: Dec 28 - 30, 2018, 3 pm - 9 pm. Inauguration - December 28.
