Muragachha village of Nadia is a hub of puppeteers. Bengal has three varieties of puppets but the String Puppets (Suto Putul in Bengali) are the most popular. These puppets are lightweight, hung from the top, and dressed up in gorgeous outfits. The puppeteers move the puppets with strings from behind a curtain. The base of the puppets is made of Shola. These puppets do not have legs. Their heads and hands are fixed to the body with a piece of wood and thread. They represent different characters. The performances are called 'Pala'. It uses a three-dimensional stage for the shows.
Muragachha has 187 artists who make the puppets. Both the puppeteer groups and the puppet makers live in this artist village. One can explore the art of puppet making and also enjoy fascinating puppet performances.
