Muragachha village of Nadia is a hub of puppeteers. Bengal has three variety of puppetry but String Puppetry (Suto Putul in Bengali) is the most popular. These puppets are light weight, hung from the top, dressed up. The puppeteers move the puppets through strings from behind a curtain. These puppets do not have legs. Their heads and hands are fixed to the body with a piece of wood and thread. They represent different characters. The performances are called 'Pala'. It uses three-dimensional stage for the shows.
Muragachha has 18 puppetry groups. Group members make the puppets themselves and perform with ballads and songs that they compose and sing.
Local puppeteers of Muragacha is going to celebrate the first edition of Putul Nach Mela in December 15 - 17, 2017. This festival is supported by WBKVIB, as part of Rural Crfat & Cultural Hub initiative of Dept. of MSME&T, Govt. of West Bengal, in association with UNESCO.
