Gulem is a small hilly village in Canacona famous for its rich repertoire of folk traditions. The place can boast of being home to the largest number of folk artists in South Goa. It is primarily inhabited by agricultural community. The beauty of Gulem’s landscape is greatly enhanced by the surrounding lush green fields.
The village was originally perched at the top of the hill. In the course of time, its people moved down the hill in search of better availability of resources.
During Gudi Parwa festival the entire village moves back to their ancestral village on the hilltop to celebrate. The women of the village perform traditional Dhalo and Fugdi dances during this time. These folk dances are the celebration of Mother Nature and include songs about nature, natural beauty and local deities.
